Sustainability and the Environment

Green Tourism

We are a small family run business, who care about preserving our environment, culture and heritage in order to achieve long-term sustainability.

Our Land

Our 220 acre farm is part of the Tir Gofal' ('Care of the land' in English) Scheme.  This is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative, aiming to help farmers actively manage the land to preserve our rich rural heritage and environment through sustainable agricultural practices. We manage the farm to actively encourage wildlife; we have regenerated our woodlands, hedges and meadows and manage the land without chemicals or pesticides. We have cultivated wild habitat areas to encourage a diversity of plants and insects.

Organic farming

Both our land and livestock are fully organic.  We have a policy of light, traditional grazing which means that our farm is not over stocked.  The care of our animals is paramount and we don’t routinely treat them with antibiotics or medicines.

Our Community

To undertake our barn conversions, we employed local craftsmen and continue to do so on a regular basis for maintenance work.

We support other businesses as a way of helping to boost our local economy. We provide visitor information to encourage guests to shop, eat out and visit locally.

We play an active role in the local community. We attend the local bi-lingual chapel and sit on the village hall management group, organising community activities and charity fundraising events.

In our visitor information files we provide details of walks, cycle routes and public transport information as an alternative to car travel. We aim to cut down “food miles” and offer extra services via our website, such as the pre-ordering of locally sourced organic produce from our neighbours' farm shop.

When carrying out our barn conversions, we re-used as many original products as possible, such as the original Welsh slates and local stone.

We arrange for our waste farm plastic to be collected on a regular basis for re-use.

Our garden furniture is made from recycled plastic and provided by the same company that collects our farm plastic waste.

We provide recycling bins in the car park, catering for glass, cans and paper. We provide biodegradable compost bags for peelings and raw materials in the kitchen.

To prevent food wastage, guests are welcome to feed their stale bread and cereal products to our hens.

Reducing waste and energy consumption

Our cottages are very well insulated and have efficient central heating boilers.

All radiators have individual temperature controls.

We replace bulbs as needed with energy efficient equivalents.

As the need arises, we replace appliances with “A” rated goods.

We ask guests to turn appliances off when not in use.

We use water butts to collect rainwater to water plants and hanging baskets.
